Walk for a cause

A friend organized a FunRun fund-raiser on Dec 9th 09 to assist a co-worker at her office.  I did not run, but walked and took some photos for the team….

That’s not fog or mist in the 3rd photo – but clouds of dust billowing from the morning street-sweeping. You can see one of the walkers pinching shut his nose in the background!

I was putting together a bag of equipment the night before. I knew I needed a wide zoom and a long zoom for the session, and was at a loss with the broken Nikkor 24-70.  The 80-200 f/2.8 was going to be perfect for the long shots but I still needed to have a good wide angle for the group shots. I could have used the Sigma 10-20… but decided to try a home-fix for the 24-70. The broken front filter-ring was easily fixed with a bit of  “super glue” [the broken-off parts mostly fitted back well] and I then attached a clear Nikon UV filter to the front. That looked just fine. Now, the next problem to fix was was the stuck zoom-ring. I figured I could try a bit of force, and at worst I’d get a sore palm and would only completely damage the lens… so a deep breath and I forced the stuck zoom-ring past 50mm mark. I moved! I force-zoomed it back to 70mm, it moved! Tight, but it moved. I continued to zoom the lens from 35mm to 70mm in quick twists of the wrist…. in a few minutes the zoom ring was fairly smooth and it did not stick. Tested the lens for auto focus at all zoom settings. Evaluated the results on a large high-rez monitor. … all looked good. So, the 24-70 lives again!
