Bits & Pieces
Katz Eye screen.
Have always liked Nikon's «old» style focusing screens as in the old classic SLRs... and have never liked the «modern high tech» ones in their DSLRs. Did a search and came across the KatzEye Optics. Just installed one of their custom made screens. WOW! This screen is just what I wanted. Split prism with matte circle and etched grid-lines. The picture below does not show the grid-lines though...
Manual focusing with primes is now accurate and fast. Also installed a Nikon DK-17M eyepiece 1.2x magnifier and the view throught the viewfinder is just brilliant [pun, intended].
Anyone still using Nikon's stock screen should seriously consider this upgrade.

A small piece of advice from personal experience: These screens are delicate - I mean really delicate - so handle with extra care. One can ruin the expensive screen quite easily! Make sure the work table is absolutely clean and free of any lint or dust. Work on a table with a large plain white sheet of paper. Lighting should be very good and if possible use a adjustable table lamp to direct light into the camera chamber. Wear rubber gloves [no, seriously]. Do NOT touch the screen surface with fingers and especially ensure that the tweezers does not touch the surface. I scratched [minor scratch though] the screen by a very slight slip of the tweezers. This is why I am emphasizing the need to be extra careful while performing the installation.
