Learning to flash

Off-camera flash.

The SB-800's off-camera wireless/wired capability allows for more control and flexibility in creatively lighting a subject than is possible with on-camera flash. I've done some off-camera flash stuff before [like here  and here ] but without the wireless mode. The wireless mode allows me to move around and shoot from any distance/angle without having to adjust exposure or flash output for the change in distance since the flash to subject distance remains constant.  Here are a few from first attempts.... getting the hang of it.

The SB800 is on wireless mode, at camera right 1/64 power and zoomed to the «narrow beam» 105 mm setting. I have a SB80DX on-camera at 1/128 power pointing backward, only to trigger the SB800 [waiting for the wireless remote trigger to arrive].

SB800 on wireless mode, close to subject with a snout [or snoot as is is called actually! made from a cardboard box] attached to get a very narrow and concentrated beam. Interestingly, the white wall behind the statue goes almost completely black by having the light source at a very close distance to the subject but at a much greater distance to the wall - these images were taken in daylight. Need to get the second speedlight also off the camera so that it can be used behind the subject to give a slight back-light and make the image 3D like.
